Cursive G

g carries a descender loop, and its nearest neighbour on the page is q — a closed loop versus a straight line. A cursive g is a short letter, and it hands over to the next letter low.

How to write a cursive g

  1. Start just below the midline, curve up and left, and close the bowl on the baseline.
  2. Continue straight down past the baseline into a lower loop.
  3. Bring the loop back up to the baseline and exit to the right.

A g sits in the short + descender zone. Capital G begins like a large c and closes with a short stroke into the baseline.

Joining g to the next letter

g joins from the baseline, coming up out of the lower loop. ga, go, ing.

Where it usually goes wrong

The lower loop closes on itself. It should hang open at the bottom or be a clean narrow loop, never a circle. Practise it beside q, which shares the descender but keeps it straight.

Words to practise after the letter

Once the single letter holds its shape, put it into short words where it appears once: go, big, again. Type any of them into the generator above and it will lay out eight ruled rows of tracing for you.
