Cursive X

x is two crossing diagonals, and the second stroke has to cut across the first rather than join it. A cursive x is a short letter, and it hands over to the next letter low.

How to write a cursive x

  1. Start just below the midline and make a short diagonal down to the baseline.
  2. Return to just below the midline and cross the first stroke on the diagonal.
  3. Exit to the right along the baseline.

A x sits in the short zone. Capital X is two crossing diagonals that run from the top line to the baseline.

Joining x to the next letter

x exits low, so the next letter starts on the baseline. xa, ex.

Where it usually goes wrong

The two diagonals are drawn as one zigzag, which leaves the letter open at the left. The second stroke must cross the first, not join it.

Words to practise after the letter

Once the single letter holds its shape, put it into short words where it appears once: box, next, exit. Type any of them into the generator above and it will lay out eight ruled rows of tracing for you.
