Cursive S

s has no straight line in it anywhere, so its width is entirely a matter of control rather than alignment. A cursive s is a short letter, and it hands over to the next letter low.

How to write a cursive s

  1. Start just below the midline and curve up and left.
  2. Swing down to the left, then back to the right along the baseline.
  3. Close the bottom curve and exit low, to the right.

A s sits in the short zone. Capital S is the same shape scaled up, drawn from the top line down to the baseline.

Joining s to the next letter

s closes at the bottom, so the exit is low and flat. sa, so, ss.

Where it usually goes wrong

The middle of the s is too wide, which makes it read as a small circle with tails. Keep the waist narrow and the whole letter the same width as an o.

Words to practise after the letter

Once the single letter holds its shape, put it into short words where it appears once: is, so, class. Type any of them into the generator above and it will lay out eight ruled rows of tracing for you.
