Cursive J
j is the only lowercase letter that lives above and below the line at once, so its two halves are written in different zones. A cursive j is a short letter, and it hands over to the next letter low.
This is the same renderer the generator uses. Open it with j already filled in to change size, rows and guides, then print.
How to write a cursive j
- Start on the baseline, sweep up toward the midline and come straight back down, past the baseline.
- Continue into a lower loop that returns up to the baseline.
- Lift and place the dot above the stem.
A j sits in the short + descender zone. Capital J starts at the top line, drops straight down, and hooks left below the baseline.
Joining j to the next letter
j exits at the baseline out of the lower loop, which makes for a wide join. ja, jo.
Where it usually goes wrong
The descender loops backwards, or the dot is placed before the descender. Loop forwards, dot last.
Words to practise after the letter
Once the single letter holds its shape, put it into short words where it appears once: just, jump, enjoy. Type any of them into the generator above and it will lay out eight ruled rows of tracing for you.
